I created a poll over on my Instagram and asked if y’all ever felt guilty about practicing self-care. 50% of the responders said that they did sometimes feel guilty about self-care. I decided to do this week’s Maya Monday episode on ways to fight self-care guilt, but if you’d rather read a summary, check out the points below!
how to fight self-care guilt
“I don’t want to spend money.”
You don’t have to! There are plenty of free self-care methods that are just as, if not more, effective than grand, extravagant methods. If you need some ideas, check out this Pinterest board. Another idea would be starting a “self-care” fund for yourself. Whenever you do something positive and reward-worthy, put some money into your fund, so you can use it to treat yourself later.
“I don’t want to get behind on my responsibilities.”
Start thinking about self-care as a responsibility, too. It will take a while, but you’ll start to prioritize the same way you do work and school. Schedule self-care time in your calendar and honor it as a commitment to yourself. Also, remember that when you practice regular self-care, you’ll be ready to take on your responsibilities with a level mind.
“I don’t know how to put myself before others.”
You can pour from an empty cup. You have to take care of yourself before you help others, and that’s not being selfish. Ensure that you’re good before you give your last to a dependent. I understand that it’s much easier said than done, but practice each day by doing a small thing for yourself, so you can make sure you’re ready to take on others’ needs.
in other words…
Self-care is a beautiful thing, but sometimes, we don’t feel so free in practicing it. There are plenty of reasons we feel self-care guilt, but we have to keep trying to eliminate it. Affirm your choices in practicing self-care, and remind yourself that you’re doing a good thing. Feel free to contact me with any other suggestions, questions, or comments, and I’ll see y’all again for next week’s episode!
